Turkey!

I mentioned in my stalking turkeys post that my brother had gotten his hunting license and was planning to take advantage of it this spring. Well, a week ago, he did. I know, it's pretty shameful that it has been so long and I haven't posted about it yet, but better late than never. As I mentioned before, my dear friend Kayla was visiting, and after we went walking (up on the very turkey hunting hill, actually), we came home and went up to my bedroom to chat. All of a sudden, I hear my mom call up the stairs, "Do you want to come see the turkey?" I can't tell you just how quickly I came tearing down those stairs and out the door to the truck. You probably don't want to know. This is what I saw when I hopped up on the tire and peeked over the edge into the bed:

Since my mom didn't really want to have anything to do with it, or even see it before it was ready to go in the brine, we took it down to the neighbors' house to prepare it. It was actually the first time I had had a part in processing any sort of animal - please don't think I'm insane when I say that I had simply too much fun helping my brother with it. I'm only mostly partially crazy. I'll spare you most of the details, because I'm guessing some won't really appreciate it if I show you all of the pictures Kayla and I took on my camera.

It was a good thing we had Kayla here, because my brother couldn't find the lungs. Kayla ended up sticking her arm in the turkey and pulling them out. ;)

When we brought it inside, my brother found a sack inside the bird that was filled with berries. And you see that think draped over the edge of the sink? Yeah, that's a lizard. It was also inside.

         Turkey in the brine:

Done cooking! The dark meat was very tough, but the white meat was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I'm thinking I can stew up the legs with some taters and onions and they'll be tasty, though.

We can get two more turkeys this spring season - I'm looking forward to it!

Just A Quick Post...

... Because I don't have time for much more right now. Yes, I'm still alive, and yes, I'm very busy. With training for my mission trip (I was at church FOUR TIMES this week), and school, and the scarf and blanket I'm knitting for the yarn store, and fixing fences and moving hay bales, and a bunch of other stuff. :)
Something really very exciting, though, is happening this evening. You curious? Well, if you must know, I'm going to see Les Miserables! Finally! It feels like I've been waiting forever, but in reality, it has only been about two months. I suppose that is how it usually works. Oh, and I just found out that the leader of the missions project and ministry at our church is in it, which is... Well, I don't really know what. Funny? Surprising? Interesting? A bit of all, I suppose.

I can't wait! Eight o'clock tonight I will be one happy little hobbit! So, definitely expect a follow-up post in a couple of days - I really hope it will be good! Too many exclamation points? Sorry, I'm extremely excited!

Blessings,
Reyna

P.S. I didn't take that picture; it's from Google.

Sewing, Sewing, and Oh! More Sewing

I feel like I've done nothing but sew for the past two days. Other than the usual school and farm business, I have spent most of my 'free time' up in my room with my pins, scissors, thread, and needle. We went to a thrift shop a couple of days ago, and I found a couple of nice skirts. The only problem was, one was a size large, and I am not. The waist was just elastic, though, so that wasn't a problem.

Before

After - no more size large!

I have also been working on sewing a skirt; not just altering it. I started sewing it by hand, because I felt like doing that, and then switched to the machine when I started the hemming. I didn't really feel like making it take a whole week. :)

Hemming the five yards of ruffle

At the thrift store, they also had some nice fabric - so I just *had* to get some. There were a bunch of really nice blue prints, but I ended up getting three matching red/brown fabrics which is out of character for me. The red, that is, not the brown. I wear brown all the time. I'm thinking a nice autumn-themed skirt with lots of small ruffles and maybe some tucks. What do you think?

I have also been working on the little pins I'm making for the yarn store, so that has been quite a bit more time than just the skirts would take. I have to find the balance between sewing and school - the other day I was pinning a hem and realized that I had an assignment due literally in ten hours. Oops. I did get it done, though.

Blessings,
Reyna
